NEWS ITEM CHAPTER 4 PART 3

How are you, I hope you are in good and healthy condition, so this time I will discuss what a news item is, types of news item, structure of news iten, characteristic of news item and examples of news item.

Definition of News Item 
text that tells an important event or event in a form resembling news, or is worthy of being made news (news)

Types of News Item
News items are divided into two types, namely news items that are delivered orally and in writing. Of course, for the written type we often find it in various print media such as tabloids or daily newspapers. For oral news items, we often listen to them from electronic media such as radio and television.

Structure of News Item
1. Main events/Newsworthy events
Taking from the word "main" which means main, then "event" which means incident, then the main event is a paragraph that contains a summary of an event, aka an important event that is a highlight to be conveyed to the reader.

In this case, one that the author should consider is actuality. Are the events to be discussed up to date or “latest”? The reason is, the latest information will certainly have a higher value than old news.

Another element that can be considered when writing a main event is the importance or not of an event, and how much influence it has on readers.

For example, the police issued a rule that the public is prohibited from wearing sandals while riding a motorcycle has a greater influence than the marriage information of a celebrity.

2. Elaboration/Background Event
You still remember, right, what must be met in order for the text to qualify as news? Yep, the contents must include 5W + 1H (what, where, when, who, why) and how.

In short, this event background contains the background of the events that occurred. Starting from what and who was involved, where, when, why, and how the incident happened. This structure must be written in full so that the reader can understand the whole text well

3. Resources of Information (Source)
Have you ever read a sentence that states the testimony or expressions of other people in the news text? For example, the news about the death of celebrity Didi Petet follows:

“He just arrived home on May 10 after attending the exhibition. In that city, he collapsed and lost consciousness and returned home in a wheelchair,” Raina said.

(“She only arrived home on May 10 after attending the exhibition. In that city, she fainted and lost consciousness and returned home in a wheelchair,” says Raina.)

Well, the example sentence above is called the source, which is the part that contains the opinions of experts or eyewitnesses. In addition, it can also be in the form of comments from various other parties involved.

Characteristic of News Item
Each text must have its own characteristics to distinguish it from other types of text. The characteristics of news item text are as follows:

1. The content of the text focuses on an important event or event

2. The language used is short but concise
Sometimes it starts with the name of the city or the name of the media that published it. For example Jakarta - ….

3. Usually accompanied by pictures / illustrations and a title (headline) that describes the essence of the event

Example of News Item

Main Event
The flooding, caused by days of heavy rain at Jakarta, has blocked roads and forced businesses in the capital to close.

Elaboration
The governor of Jakarta has declared a state of emergency. He also said he was committed to making a "breakthrough" in efforts to tackle the flooding. Jakarta resident, Wildan, urged the government to do more to stop floods in future. "The dams are no longer sufficient to hold the water," he said Yayat Supriatna, an urban planning expert, told the BBC that Jakarta's drainage system "is still the same as it was in the Dutch colonial era" and should be rebuilt. "The floods are caused by the failure to manage and sustain the rivers as water reservoirs. I suggest the governor dredge the rivers because if the rivers are deeper the better [the system] will function."

The Jakarta Post said two of the people killed in the capital were children, aged 13 and two. State funds are available to help those affected by the flooding following the declaration of the state of emergency, which will remain in effect until 27 January.
